China's Amperex Technology Limited (ATL) will become the only supplier of batteries for Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phones. The announcement was made after faulty batteries prompted a worldwide recall of the phone, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported on Monday.
Samsung's shares fell to their lowest level in nearly two months on Monday after it told customers to switch off and return their new Galaxy Note 7 smartphones due to fire-prone batteries. The company is reported to have contacted ATL to order an additional 4 million batteries as replacements in the Note 7 devices.
Samsung first halted sales earlier this month of the Note 7 in 10 markets, including South Korea and the United States, but not in China where it said the model was equipped with batteries from a different supplier.
Samsung has stopped receiving batteries from its own SDI subsidiary, which supplied around 70 percent of the Galaxy Note 7 batteries globally. Now, for the time being, ATL is set to become the sole battery supplier for Samsung by shipments.
