A promotional clip of a film about the history of the Korean War, released earlier this month, has sparked controversy online. Some netizens insist that it's inappropriate to make a big deal about something that happened more than 60 years ago, while others worry that the film may worsen already tense ties with South Korea.
In the clip, several elderly Chinese tourists played by veteran actors proudly talk about how they triumphantly entered Seoul during the war. The characters claim that they used neither passports nor visas to enter the country.
Hong Kong director Pang Chun, who is directing the film, defended himself and his movie, saying that he and his collaborators had nothing to do with the promotional clip.
Produced by the China Film Group Corporation and starring popular actors Liu Ye and Wang Luodan, "My War" focuses on a group of young people who leave their hometown to take part in the war efforts. The film is an adaptation of renowned writer Ba Jin's novel "Tuanyuan" (Reunion).
"Young people today should know more about the sacrifices the older generation made, which brought about the peace and happiness we enjoy today," actor Liu Ye was quoted as saying by CCTV.
From the 1960s to the 1980s, the Korean War was a popular setting for many Chinese war films. Among them, 1964's "Heroic Breed" was an especially major hit that influenced a generation. However, it has been some time since film studios and filmmakers last chose to capture this era in China's history.
