Situated about 40 minutes from Rome, Villa d'Este's gardens are something of a wonder.

It was inscribed into the Unesco World Heritage list in 2001 as one of the earliest and most refined example of giardini delle meraviglie, or garden of wonder.

Established in the 16th century, the garden is filled with references to the Renaissance period and is said to have set the stylistic trend for European gardens.

Its most attractive feature is perhaps the impressive collection of fountains, including one which plays a hydraulic organ.

Tickets starts from €8,00 (£6.37), which includes entry into the villa itself, but prices vary depending on the exhibitions inside the property.
