At Brainard Lake, Colorado, Kahlua (above) poses on icy terrain, looking as though he's ready for adventure
DeHaas is capturing every moment of their trip and sharing the stunning photographs on his Instagram account and personal website
DeHaas used to keep his condition secret but after his kidney function dropped to just 50 per cent and a 'sprained ankle' turned out to be gout earlier this year, he decided to use it to inspire people.
He said: 'I didn't tell anyone about my condition for so long because I didn't want them to treat me differently.
'But since making it public I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I feel like I can finally live my life without holding anything back.
'Life is too short, whether you're ill or not, to pursue a 'normal' life instead of pursuing your passions.'
The amateur photographer said people think he's crazy for giving up his steady job for a life on the open road but he wants more people to do the same.
He said: 'Being at my corporate job made me feel like what you imagine a wild animal feels like trapped in a zoo.
'My life now feels 1,000 times different. Every day is an adventure with something new around every corner.
'I'm like a bird that's been let loose to fly the skies after being in a cage for years.
'I hope people will hear my story and be inspired to take a chance and pursue something they love. You only learn about yourself when you step outside your comfort zone.'
