Kahlua's 26-year-old owner traded his cubicle at a mortgage investment company for a camera after finding out the incurable kidney disease he has been battling since childhood, IgA nephropathy (IgA), was getting worse.
The condition means DeHaas's immune system has been attacking his kidneys his whole life, leaving them irreversibly damaged.
Hiking, backpacking and traveling will be off the cards when DeHaas's kidneys inevitably get worse so he is making the most of the time he has and has taken his best friend along for the ride.
So far, the pair have already covered several states including Arizona, Colorado and Iowa.
He said: 'It's more a question of when I'll need dialysis or a transplant rather than "if". If I don't get one who knows? When I think about it, it scares the hell out of me.
'I know I won't be able to do the things I love to do now and even taking Kahlua for a walk could end up being a challenge.
