Germany Launches Database Sweep to Search TerroristsGerman police started a nationwide sweep of computer databases on Monday to try to find out possible terrorists, officials said.Police are hoping to snare suspected terrorists who live in Germany as ordinary citizens while waiting for chances to take terrorist actions. The databases to be examined first will be police registers and registration lists in universities, said interior officials. The circle of suspected would be narrowed through the data examinations, they said. A total of 13 states took part in the sweep, while other three states, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Bremen, are awaiting approval from their local parliaments to participate. Local press reports said that the September 11 attacks against the United States could have been planned in Germany.
