Foot-and-mouth Disease Rumor "Groundless": FM Spokesman

Reports by some British media saying that the current foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Britain might have come from China are "groundless", said Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Sun Yuxi.

Sun made the remark at a regular press conference Thursday afternoon when asked to comment on such reports, which say that the disease in Britain might have come from China because a Chinese restaurant in Britain trafficked meats from the Far East and the meats might have been from China.

Sun said Chinese government departments have always maintained strict quarantine measures against the disease and there have been no such cases in China so far.

China exercises strict tests and quarantines on its meat imports and exports, noted the spokesman.

The European Union has not given permission for the importation of China's cloven-hoofed animals such as pig and cattle and related products, said Sun, stressing that the foot-and-mouth disease in Britain has nothing to do with China.
