Chunghwa Telecom Compensates Users for Undersea Cable Breaking

On February 9, a major undersea optical cable linking China with the United States was broken in the Pacific Ocean, which lies within the Yokohama maintenance zone of Japan. Millions of Internet surfers from China's mainland, Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong received an extremely slow response or none at all when they visited websites in the United States over the weekend.

Sources from Taiwan media said February 12 that Chunghwa Telecom will indemnify users for the loss incurred from the break in accordance with concerned rules.

The Chunghwa Telecom said that it would reduce monthly rents and draw up other preferential measures to indemnify uses' loss caused by the broken cable.

As to the China Telecom, it has not as yet clearly expressed its attitude regarding whether or not to compensate users for their losses. And thus far no user in China's mainland has asked for compensation from China Telecom.
