Severed US-China Cable Expected to Resume Operation in 10 Days

China Telecom on Monday said that the severed US-China undersea telecommunications cable is expected to return to normal operation on February 23.

On February 9, a major undersea fiber optic cable linking China with the United States was cut in the Pacific Ocean near Japan.

China Telecom has taken a series of immediate measures since the accident -- so far a 100-mb (megabytes) network from China Telecom to the United States and Japan has been restored, a China Telecom official said.

The source said that part of China's Internet traffic has been restored and a 250-mb emergency traffic route through satellites will be put into operation on Tuesday.

According to China Telecom, a Japanese repair ship has departed for the accident site, and China Telecom has sent its own personnel to assist in the repair work.

"If everything goes well, the cable will be back to normal operation on February 23," the source said.
