China to Continue Its Role on the Korean Peninsula Issue

China will continue to play a constructive role in the future in helping safeguard peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue Thursday.

To maintain peace and stability of the peninsula is a basic principle of the Chinese government in handling relevant issues, Zhang said at today's regular press conference in response to a related question.

China always maintains that the two sides of the peninsula should gradually increase mutual trust and improve relations through direct dialogue and contact, she noted.

She said China welcomes the summit meeting to be held in the near future between the two sides, and hopes that it will produce positive results.
