Landslide-relief Efforts at Yigong Lake Successful

A diversion canal dug after a heavy landslide at Yigong Lake was put into use on Thursday.

Only a moderate amount of water is running into the canal and is not likely to pose a threat to the lake's lower reaches, said a local rescue official.

To prevent accidents, local residents and the majority of disaster workers have been evacuated.

The landslide occurred on April 9 in Yigong Township of Bomi County. The 300-million cubic meters of mud and rock temporarily dammed the Yigong River, causing the water level in Yigong Lake to rise sharply, destroying seven kilometers of highways, submerging large tracts of cropland and tea plantations, and leaving more than 4,000 local people homeless.

The local government immediately organized a rescue team, which completed an 800-meter-long canal on June 4.
