Li Peng Inspects Enterprises in Beijing

Li Peng Inspects Enterprises in Beijing
China's top legislator said that the state-owned enterprises will have great prospects once they deepen reforms and build a modern enterprise system.

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), made the remarks during inspections to the Dongfang Electronic Group Ltd. in Beijing early this month. Li was informed that the group went from being a loss-maker to a profit-earner after it built a modern enterprise system and restructured its operations. It has been listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.

During the inspection in Beijing on June 1-6, Li also visited the Beijing Heavy Machinery Plant, the Electronic Company of the Capital Iron & Steel Complex, and the Beijing Matsushita Color Teletube Co. Ltd.

The Beijing municipal government's policy on industry restructuring is perfectly suited to its status as China's political and cultural center, Li noted.

Efforts will be made to speed up changes in the services sector and promote scientific and technological progress, he said. Beijing is superior to other cities in its development of new and high-tech industries, as it is a center of institutions of higher learning, he added.

The system of the people's congress is a fundamental political system of China, and strengthening the leadership of the Communist Party of China is a guarantee for improving the system, Li noted.
