3Com to participate in China Unicom's GSM network

Chinese Telco China United Telecommunications (China Unicom) has chosen the 3Com Comm Works IP telephony solution for nationwide voice-over-IP (VOIP) deployment.

China Unicom is using the Comm Works IP telephony solution within its national GSM mobile network, which serves more than 5.2 million subscribers.

The initial deployment includes 155 Total Control 1000 Media Gateways with more than 28,000 ports, interconnecting China Unicom's IP backbone with its GSM network in 130 cities across the country.

China Unicom signed a contract in January to purchase 26,000 ports of the 3Com Total Control multi-service access platform to provide dial-up Internet access to its customers.

The solution is based on a three-tier architecture of gateways, gatekeepers and back-end servers, interconnected by open standards-based protocols. It also provides standardized and open interfaces.
