BEIJING, March 11 (Xinhua) -- A Foreign Ministry spokeswoman on Monday called on Argentina and Britain to resolve an issue concerning the political status of the Malvinas Islands in accordance with a UN resolution.
"China supports Argentina's claim to the islands and expects both sides to resolve the issue through dialogue in accordance with the law," spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a daily press briefing.
A referendum on whether the islands will retain their political status as a British overseas territory began Sunday morning.
Hua said the issue is a leftover from colonialism.
