At the invitation of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of India, Qi Jianguo, deputy chief of general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), and his party paid an official visit to India from March 21 to 23, 2013, during which they met with Arackaparambil Kurien Antony, Indian defense minister, and Shivshankar Menon, Indian national security adviser, respectively.
Antony expressed that India attaches importance to the development of the defense relations between the two countries and sincerely hopes that the two sides can build closer relations and make positive contributions to maintaining the peace and tranquility of border areas and promoting the peace and stability of the region and the world at large. Menon said that both India and China are committed to achieving social and economic progress, and have broader prospects for future bilateral cooperation.
Qi Jianguo said that the friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries have a vital bearing on not only the well-being of the people of the two countries but also the common interests of the people of the Asia-Pacific region. The Chinese military is willing to make joint efforts with the Indian side to constantly expand friendly exchanges, deepen pragmatic cooperation and push forward extensive and intensive development of the relations between the two militaries.
During his visit, Qi Jianguo also held talks with Shashi Kant Sharma, Indian defense secretary, and exchanged views with Sharma on further pushing forward the exchanges and cooperation between the two militaries.
