The General Staff Headquarters (GSH) of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) held a discussion and exchange activity on topics of confrontation training code-named "2012 Confrontation in Nanjing" on November 26, 2012 in Nanjing, capital city of east China's Jiangsu province. This activity aimed at pushing forward the reform of confrontation training towards actual combat in an all-round way. The new actual-combat-oriented confrontation training mode has passed the verification of systematic test and achieved initial results.
The PLA confrontation training started in the 1980s and has gradually evolved into a basic form of actual-combat-oriented training which played a significant role in generating and uplifting the troop units' overall combat capability.
The GSH of the PLA organized successive cross-military-area-command base training, "Sword" series electromagnetic confrontation training, comprehensive tests and drills on plateaus and multiple actual-troop independent confrontation drills at division or regiment level among various troop units in recent years, cracking some problems long existing in confrontation training.
According to a person in charge of the Military Training Department under the GSH, at present, the basic theories of "systematic confrontation, precise confrontation, independent confrontation and scientific confrontation" have been established in the training departments across the PLA; the layered confrontation mode of "command confrontation - actual-troop confrontation - live-ammunition confrontation" is emerging as a new training mode.
The leading organs of the PLA general headquarters/departments will also promulgate relevant regulations on confrontation drill, actively promote the normalization of actual-combat-oriented confrontation training mechanism in the next step, he added. The integrated training among military academies, training bases and combat troop units will become an important means for the PLA to generate and improve information-system-based systematic combat capability.
