Former National Basketball Association All-Star point guard Gilbert Arenas is presently in Shanghai for a trial with the Shanghai Sharks ahead of the Chinese Basketball Association season which kicks off later this month.
However, Yao Ming's team had announced the signing of DJ White and Elijah Millsap in September as the Sharks' two foreign players for the upcoming season. If Arenas stays, one of the two will be let go.
"About the player changes, please notice our official announcements," said Zhang Chi, vice manager and spokesman of the Sharks, who, however, did not reveal more details.
Contrary to the Sharks' low-profile, the 30-year-old Agent Zero is openly touting his future in the CBA. Arenas, a three-time All-Star, ran into a fan on Sunday afternoon at a restaurant on downtown Nanjing Road W.
"He's very nice. I said I hope he can join Shanghai and win the championship for the city," the fan named Joy said on his micro blog on Sunday night. "He said he's trying his best to stay in Shanghai."
Shanghai was not Arenas's first choice. He earlier went to the Guangdong Southern Tigers, hoping to reunite with Yi Jianlian, his former Washington Wizards teammate, but the deal fell through.
