A deteriorating environment and other social problems have created bottlenecks in the urbanization process of Chinese cities.

The newly unveiled "2013 City Competitiveness Blue Book" with the theme "A New Benchmark: Constructing the Ideal City with Sustainable Competitiveness" has explored the sustainable development mechanism and the new trend in urbanization based on 68 indexes covering livability, business-friendliness, harmony, ecology, information and culture, and urban and rural balance.

Using objective statistics from 2012, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences released the report for the 11th time after conducting research and analysis on the comprehensive competitiveness of 293 cities and the sustainable competitiveness of 287 cities .

Hong Kong took the lead and Beijing ranked sixth according to the newly released report. There are no cities in the middle region and west region that ranked among the top 10 most competitive cities.

According to the report, the cities of Hong Kong, Taipei, Macao, and cities on the east coast and south coast, and around Bohai Sea possess relatively strong comprehensive competitiveness.

Hong Kong, Macau, and Wuxi were the top three cities in terms of livability.

The report revealed that small and medium-sized cities are more harmonious compared to metropolises such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou.
