YANGON, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar President U Thein Sein on Thursday called for drawing demarcation line between politics and religion, warning that mixing religion with politics would go against true teachings of various faiths.
"We have seen how violent attempts to control political problems and crisis and how the acts of the radical politicians without any respect for fundamental democratic value such as diversity of opinions and freedom of expression could have long- term detrimental impact on the society at large," U Thein Sein said in his monthly regular radio address to the nation, calling for vigilance against such threat and tragic legacy.
Noting that the government has had valuable discussions with representatives of Interfaith Dialogue Group and Human Rights Commission recently, he vowed to expand the government's efforts to find lasting solution for peaceful coexistence among different religions and prevent further violence.
On the progress of peace building efforts with ethnic armed groups, the president said the government is negotiating with them in efforts to sign a national ceasefire accord in the very near future, stressing the need to make necessary preparations to proceed with political dialogue inclusive of all relevant stakeholders.
With regard to the prisoner issue, U Thein Sein said he is working towards fulfilling his promise of no political prisoner in Myanmar by the end of this year.
He reiterated the government's will to achieve peace, foster economic development and mold a better future.
