YANGON, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar district and township courts have sentenced 20 more rioters to two to 15 years in prison with hard labor respectively for being involved in a deadly riot in Meikhtila in northern Mandalay region in March, official media reported Thursday.
In April and May, 10 other rioters, including three main instigators, were sentenced to two to 17 years in prison.
Meanwhile, police battalions had been formed to quell violence and riots and plans were underway to form one more battalion in Meikhtila and to add three more security companies to auxiliary forces in Nay Pyi Taw and states and regions.
After modifying the current anti-riot manual, the Myanmar Police Force will work out a new manual and organize training courses to train police forces in states and regions, the report said.
The Meikhtila riot was sparked by a brawl between buyers and sellers over a bit of gold clip at a gold shop in the township on March 20.
The riot spread to three other townships, prompting the declaration of state of emergency since March 22 up to now.
Myanmar police force has claimed arrest of 68 suspects linked to the riot that left more than 11,000 people homeless.
In the latest development, order has been gradually restored to these riot-torn areas.
