Bahrain steps up war against drug addiction

MANAMA, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Bahrain has seized narcotics worth millions of dinars last year with the help of sophisticated equipment's and modern technology at its borders, the Bahraini interior minister said on Tuesday.

The Interior Minister Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa said that the Anti-Narcotics Directorate has seized last year 31, 550, 974 kg of narcotics, compared with 2, 279,689 kg in 2011.

"This led to reduction in the death cases from 26 deaths in 2011 to 7 in 2012," said the minister. He highlighted this in his speech as the world globally marks the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26.

"Bahrain is one of the top countries that fight addiction and prevent traffickers from taking the country as a crossing point," he said.

The minister said a national strategy has been under preparation to reduce demands and supply for narcotics in cooperation with the United Nations Development Board. The minister said through national awareness plans they educated about 50,000 students on narcotics.
