FAIZABAD, Afghanistan, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Six Taliban militants and an Afghan security personnel were killed as fighting flared up in Wardoj district of Badakhshan province, 315 km northeast of Kabul on Monday, a security official Mohammad Ishaq Tamkin said.

"Units of Afghan police and the national army launched a coordinated operation against Taliban in Wardoj district in the wee hours of Monday and the operation which lasted until 04:00 a.m. morning left six rebels dead and injured five others," Tamkin told Xinhua.

One security personnel was killed and two others sustained injuries during the clash which lasted around four hours, he added.

Meantime, Zabihullah Mujahid who claims to speak for the Taliban outfit in talks with media via telephone from unknown location confirmed the conflict, saying several security forces have been killed in the fight which is still continuing.

The mountainous Wardoj district has been the scene of isolated Taliban-linked activities over the past two years.

Warring sides in Afghanistan often exaggerate the number of casualties inflicted on the opponents and it is difficult to get verification from independent sources.
