Ukraine's president meets with Gen. Xu Qiliang

BEIJING, May 24, (ChinaMil) -- Viktor Yanukovych, president of Ukraine, met with Gen. Xu Qiliang, the visiting member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and vice chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), on May 23, 2013 at the presidential palace.

Xu Qiliang conveyed President Xi Jinping's cordial greetings and best wishes to President Yanukovych. Yanukovych expressed his heartfelt thanks and asked Xu Qiliang to convey his sincere greetings and best wishes to President Xi Jinping.

Yanukovych extended his warm welcome to Xu Qiliang for his visit to Ukraine. He expressed that the Ukrainian side cherishes Ukraine-China strategic partnership, takes the Ukraine-China relations as a diplomatic priority, is delighted to see that China plays an increasingly important role in the international arena and appreciates China's great achievements made in its economic and social development. The Ukrainian side is willing to work together with the Chinese side to constantly push forward the exchanges and cooperation in various fields, including the relations between the Ukrainian and Chinese militaries, to a new high.

Xu Qiliang said that China-Ukraine strategic partnership has been constantly enriched and developed with the kind care of the heads of the two states. The two countries have been firmly supporting each other on issues concerning their core interests, which is in the fundamental interests of the people of the two countries and is conducive to maintaining regional and international peace and stability.

Xu Qiliang also said the Chinese side is willing to make joint efforts with the Ukrainian side to further enhance mutual strategic trust, deepen pragmatic cooperation, carry forward traditional friendship, and constantly deepen and expand the relations between the two countries and the two militaries at a new starting point, so as to achieve mutual benefit and win-win results.

On the afternoon of that day, Mykola Azarov, Ukraine's prime minister, met with Xu Qiliang. Before this meeting, Xu Qiliang also held talks with Pavlo Lebedyev, Ukraine's defense minister, and they reached broad consensus on deepening the exchanges and cooperation between the two militaries.
