KIEV, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Two miners were confirmed dead, and one remains trapped after a methane explosion ripped through a coal mine in eastern Ukraine, authorities said on Monday.

The explosion occurred at around 5:20 p.m. local time (GMT 1420) at Chaykino mine in Donetsk region on Sunday, when 124 miners were working underground, the State Service for Emergencies said.

One hundred and twenty-one workers were rescued shortly after the accident, while three miners were trapped around 1,100 meters underground.

Rescuers recovered the bodies of the two killed miners early Monday, while the fate of the third worker remains unknown.

Rescue works are underway, while operations at the mine were suspended.

Mine accidents happen frequently in Ukraine due to outdated equipments and loose safety regulations.
