BEIRUT, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said Monday that over 223,000 Syrian refugees are now receiving protection and assistance from the Lebanese government, the UN and their NGO partners.
In its weekly report, the UNHCR said nearly 155,000 refugees are registered officially through its offices in Lebanon, while more than 67,000 are awaiting the registration date.
According to the UNHCR, most of the refugees come from Homs, Idlib, Damascus and Aleppo.
The UNHCR registered 1,500 refugees daily in 4 centers in Lebanon. The total number of refugees registered in northern Lebanon is 76,803, 59,411 in the eastern Bekaa region, and 19,176 in Beirut and southern Lebanon.
The Arab League has dispatched a delegation to the neighboring countries of Syria to assess the situation of the refugees, and described their conditions in Lebanon as "appalling."
