YANGON, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar and the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) have vowed further cooperation in the latter's distribution of humanitarian aid to the country especially in conflict areas, the official daily New Light of Myanmar reported Tuesday.
The pledge was made when Myanmar President U Thein Sein met with ICRC President Peter Maurer in Nay Pyi Taw Monday.
U Thein Sein praised the stance of ICRC as a non-aligned organization with no political intervention and reaffirmed that Myanmar will continue adhering to the Geneva Convention to which it is a signatory.
He also thanked ICRC for its ongoing activities to upgrade facilities.
Maurer said his Myanmar visit is to extend the areas of cooperation with the country in the future, saying that the distribution of humanitarian aid to the needy people is of their top priority.
Noting that ICRC is carrying out the tasks transparent to the host country, he added that coordination is being made with Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS) for the offer of aid.
In July 2012, Myanmar coordinated with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for the settlement of refugee issue in Rakhine state.
