HOUSTON, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- A middle school student in the U.S. state of Texas has been arrested after being accused of threatening to bring a gun to school, local media reported Thursday.

The detention of the 11-year-old fifth-grader at Rogers Middle School in the city of Pearland came after the student made the threat Wednesay following an argument with a classmate, the Houston Chronicle quoted officials as saying.

The student did not return to school on Thursday, said Kim Hocott, spokeswoman for Pearland Independent School District, adding that no weapon was brought to school.

District administrators and Pearland police have begun an investigation, and police presence was increased at the school on Thursday.

School district officials said they are taking "appropriate measures to discipline the student."

"Our top priority is maintaining a safe and secure educational environment for our students, and we immediately investigate rumors connected to their safety," Hocott said.

"We encourage students to talk to a trusted adult if they hear or see anything out of the ordinary or suspicious," she added.
