NEW YORK, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets of New York City Thursday to watch the 86th annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, which is seen as a joyous occasion to lift a storm weary city into the holiday spirit.
The parade sets out at 9 AM from 77th and Central Park West with more than 3 million people in attendance and another 50 million watching on TV. This year, some new characters have been added to Macy's lineup of giant balloons, including Elf on a Shelf and Papa Smurf and a new version of Hello Kitty.
With hundreds of clowns, 28 floats, bands, performers making their way down the parade route, the streets seem to be enveloped in a sea of happiness with cheers and screams out cried by the spectators along the roads.
"New York City has suffered enough from Hurricane Sandy, this is a great moment for the city, we really enjoy it," said one parade goer. "I think that I should be thankful for everything that I have because some people got hurt in hurricane sandy and lost most of their stuff."
George and Susan, with their daughter and son sitting on their shoulders respectively, was one of the typical New York families who took part in the celebration event, which they regard as an integral program in the Thanksgiving festival, along with the traditional Turkey dinner.
