AMMAN, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Jordan on Sunday detained radical Islamic cleric Abu Qatada upon arrival after he was deported from Britain, state-run Petra news agency reported.

Abu Qatada, whose real name is Omar Mahmoud Othman, arrived in Amman Sunday morning and was handed over to the concerned authorities for trial, said Jordan's Minister of State for Media Affairs, Mohammad Momani.

Abu Qatada will be tried on terrorism charges, he said, adding that the trial will be fair and transparent in line with international standards.

The radical Islamic cleric was charged with planning to conduct terrorist attacks in Jordan in 1999 and 2000.

Abu Qatada was deported from Britain at dawn of Sunday after he lost several bails to remain in Britain.
