Huang Binhong (1865-1955), born in Jinhua, Zhejiang Province, was a renowned Chinese literati painter and art historian. His landscapes were unique for their distinctive "black, dense, thick and heavy" style.
Even though his masterpieces were rarities on the Chinese art market, his work was sold for slightly less compared with others. His 1952 "Mind Travelling among Mountains" (40.5cm × 305cm) was hammered for US$7.94 million at China Guardian 2011 Autumn Auction in Beijing, which set his highest record. In 2012, the best result came for his "Lofty Pavilion among Pine and Bamboo" (145cm × 65cm), fetching US$2.16 million at China Guardian Auctions Co., Ltd.
