The production crew of "Special Identity" announced on Feb. 29 that Vincent Zhao had officially stepped away from the film, disappointing fans who had been eagerly anticipating the long-awaited collaboration between the two kung fu superstars. In a media interview published on March 15, Zhao blasted Yen for allegedly diminishing his lead role in the script. He said that in addition the film producers had announced his removal from the production without any prior discussion.
Yen later released a statement saying that the discontinued partnership with Zhao was the decision of the investors of "Special Identity." Yen said Zhao had distorted the truth in interviews, claiming that he was forced out by Yen. Yen said it was a malicious act of slander, which Zhao used to promote himself.
Chinese A-list actress Hsu Chi became a target in the war of words after she responded to Zhao's criticism of Yen by saying that in her personal experience of working with him, she had always found him to be dedicated and discreet. Thousands of fans subsequently weighed in their two cents on the debate.
Hsu on the other hand found herself under attack via the mass release of erotic photos featuring images from such soft-porn films as "Sex & Zen II" in Hong Kong-shot before she rose to any significant fame.
Famous Chinese film director Feng Xiaogang, who worked with Hsu in the romantic series "If you are the one" said, "If you [online attackers] were condemned as animals, it would be an insult to animals."
