The company wants to equal its Singles' Day sales volume of over 100 million yuan, a staff member from the public relations department of Dangdang told the Global Times Thursday on condition of anonymity.
Taobao does not intend to pursue record high sales, but wants to help small-scale online sellers establish their brands, so they opened up a special section Monday where each seller can list 20 goods at a promotional price, the company told the Global Times Thursday via e-mail.
Starting November 26, all Taobao sellers have been eligible to apply for this sales promotion with no additional fees.
"Taobao shoppers can check the goods listed in this section and make pre-orders with no prepayments. Transactions can be made only on Wednesday," an anonymous Taobao PR staffer told the Global Times Thursday, adding that 802,000 sellers applied, bringing the total number of listed goods to 8.47 million by Wednesday.
She predicted that express delivery companies' warehouses would not be overwhelmed by this sales promotion.
However, a Zhejiang-based online suitcase seller who has applied for the taobao.com promotion told the Global Times Thursday on condition of anonymity that it has already started selling goods at the Wednesday promotional prices due to delivery logistics concerns.
