Temperatures are expected to drop Sunday with the low falling to 0 C as a cold front sweeps in this weekend, the local weather bureau forecast Thursday.

The high temperature in the city will fall to 6 C Sunday, down from highs between 12 C and 10 C Friday and Saturday. The low temperature will range between 2 C and 4 C on Friday and Saturday, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.

Despite the colder temperatures, the weather will be sunny with a smattering of clouds until Tuesday, said Fu Yi, a press officer with the weather bureau.

For those keeping track, Fu said that winter arrived in Shanghai Sunday.

According to weather bureau criteria, winter begins when the average daily temperature falls below 10 C for five consecutive days, with the first day marking the start of the season.

The average temperature in Shanghai has remained below 10 C since Sunday.

Weather bureau officials reminded residents to wear heavier clothing and to be more vigilant about fires due to the dry winter air.
