Brick wall built to shield motorists from poverty (2)

By Sun Xiaobo (Global Times)

09:24, December 04, 2012

"The walls aim to enhance the appearance of the villages and encourage villagers to pay more attention to the tidiness of their homes," a publicity officer with the county's Party committee, who declined to be named, told the Global Times, adding that the county also plans to clean up the lanes in the villages and renovate the houses.

A township official named Gong Zhiqiang suggested the wall cost either 500 yuan per meter or per square meter, and the majority of villagers supported the project.

Gong said the wall will create a better living environment, but many villagers have yet to recognize the benefits. "Some people here have just become literate and don't understand the idea behind the project."
