"I think this is because there is a more sustained effort from the Chambers of Commerce that Germany and France have implanted in China. It is a big issue that we are looking at at the moment," said Bentley.
"The British government is looking at how it sustains trade efforts in China. At the moment we take big trade missions to China and tour the country and then come back. What the French and Germans have done is create an ecosystem which helps to sustain and support trade efforts on the ground on an ongoing basis and that is something we have to learn about. I don't quite know what we will do," Bentley added.
However he was sure that a greater penetration of the Chinese market by British firms would depend upon a more integrated approach between the government and private businesses.
