Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democratic Party of Thailand and former prime minister, extended warmest congratulations to the CPC on the opening of the 18th national congress, saying the two parties' close friendship will be further strengthened in the years to come.

Romano Prodi, former Italian prime minister and former president of the European Commission, said the 18th CPC congress is a big event for China, in China's history and for the Chinese society.

China has continuously pushed forward its historic reforms initiated by Deng Xiaoping and made remarkable economic achievements, with its responsibilities on the global political and economic arenas increasingly important, he said, adding that the new Chinese leadership will lead China to further active and peaceful integration in the international community.

Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said decisions taken at the CPC congress will be of major significance not only for the Chinese people but for the rest of the world.

"I have every confidence that the congress will lay the foundations for continued peaceful development, sustained economic growth, efficient modernization and greater social equality and justice for all," he said in a message.
