Across the month of October, avocados are ripening across Menglian Dai, Lahu and Wa Autonomous County in Pu'er, southwest China's Yunnan Province. At the plantations, farmers move through the trees, picking, hauling and crating avocados.
Avocado plantations in the county now cover 122,100 mu (about 8,140 hectares), with 27,700 mu already bearing fruit, and the industry's total output value has topped 1.5 billion yuan (about $225 million). The new crop is expected to replace 15 percent of avocado imports.
In 2025, the Menglian Avocado brand was valued at 1.75 billion yuan. For people in the county, each avocado has become a "golden fruit" that boosts their incomes.
