China's human rights achievements recognized globally: spokesperson

(Xinhua)    10:21, April 14, 2020

BEIJING, April 13 (Xinhua) -- The appointment of a Chinese official into the Consultative Group of the UN Human Rights Council demonstrated once again the international community's recognition of China's achievements in human rights development, a foreign ministry spokesperson said Monday.

The appointment of Jiang Duan, minister of the Chinese mission to the United Nations in Geneva, also showed the world's recognition of China's active participation in international human rights exchanges and cooperation, spokesperson Zhao Lijian said at a press briefing.

China has been actively engaged in the work of the UN Human Rights Council and other multilateral institutions on human rights, Zhao said, commenting on a letter sent by some U.S. senators to United Nations expressing opposition to the appointment.

With the poor human rights record of the United States, which has withdrawn from the UN Human Rights Council, it is ridiculous that the U.S. senators meddled in the affairs of the council as well as the human rights situations of other countries.

The Chinese side advises them to prioritize solving the human rights problems of the United States, and promote the human rights and well-being of the American people through practical actions, the spokesperson said.
