Putin calls on Russians to stick it out to defeat coronavirus

(Xinhua)    08:45, April 09, 2020

MOSCOW, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday called on compatriots not to give in and to accept with dignity all the restrictions in order to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Together we will overcome everything," Putin said in an address to the nation during a televised online conference with regional governors.

He recalled that during its long history, the Russian nation managed to survive despite serious trials, so it will be able to cope with a new disaster.

Putin said he understood the fatigue that had been accumulated during the mandatory self-isolation imposed till the end of April, with a "serious burden of financial, domestic, and other everyday problems."

However, he said, the discipline will help to achieve a breakthrough in the fight against infection that the nation must achieve.

The Russian authorities will keep working confidently, rhythmically and professionally to alleviate the burden imposed on the Russian people, Putin said.

For this, Russia has a stable macroeconomic situation, a smallest ever state debt, as well as a solid "airbag" in the form of reserves accumulated over previous years, he said.

Russia has tallied 8,672 cases of COVID-19 in 81 out of 85 regions as of Wednesday, registering a record daily rise of 1,175, official data showed.
