HONG KONG, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- A couple from Wuhan in central China's Hubei Province have been confirmed for novel coronavirus infection, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Hong Kong to 10, the Center for Health Protection (CHP) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government said Wednesday.

The two preliminarily confirmed cases involve a 73-year-old female and a 72-year-old male who reside in Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province. They came to Hong Kong on Jan. 22 by flight to visit their relatives, and were admitted to hospital on Jan. 28, according to Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the Communicable Disease Branch of the CHP.

The existing 10 confirmed cases in Hong Kong include three couples, and all of them are elderly, Chuang told a press briefing jointly held by the HKSAR government's Department of Health and the Hospital Authority.

She stressed that the elderly might be susceptible to novel coronavirus, thus should avoid going out as much as possible.

According to Vivien Chuang, chief manager (Infection, Emergency and Contingency) of the Hospital Authority, the number of cases fulfilling the reporting criteria in Hong Kong increased by 56 in the past 24 hours to 585 in total.

Among the previously confirmed eight cases, seven patients are in stable condition, while one is being treated at the ICU in serious condition.

Out of all the 585 reported cases, 12 involve medical staff, among whom 10 have been discharged from hospital, and two remain in hospital in stable condition.
