Major titles won by Chinese athletes in 2019

BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- As 2019 draws to a close, Xinhua takes a closer look at the key figures behind Chinese athletes' sporting triumphs this year.

128 - Chinese athletes won a total of 128 world titles across 33 disciplines, 14 more than in 2018. Many titles came from China's traditionally strong disciplines of shooting, diving, weightlifting, and table tennis.

China's women's volleyball team retained its World Cup title, and historical breakthroughs were seen in marathon swimming, men's shooting, and women's 3-on-3 basketball, while much progress was also made in disciplines such as rowing and canoeing.

51 - In a promising display ahead of next year's Tokyo Olympic Games, 51 of China's 128 major titles came from 17 Olympic disciplines. Notable areas of success came in aquatics, with 12 gold medals; weightlifting, where ten golds were secured; and table tennis, which accounted for seven gold medals.

17 - 17 Chinese athletes and one team broke or equaled 16 world records. Notably, seven records were broken in weightlifting, and four in shooting.

10 - 10 world records were broken or equaled in Olympic events.

3,586 - Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Chinese athletes have won 3,586 world major titles and have broken or equaled world records 1,341 times.

3,560 - Since China began its program of reform and opening up in 1978, Chinese athletes have won 3,560 world major titles and have broken world records 1,167 times.
