China’s governance capability continues to see growth over the past years, rising to 19th as the top developing country with per capita GDP close to $10,000, according to a latest index report from a Chinese university.

Published on Nov 24 by East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL), the National Governance Index 2019 report, which evaluated 192 countries across the world, found that top 30 countries on the ranking featuring developed countries such as the US, the UK, Germany and Denmark.

Specifically, China’s economic and social development in the past seven decades yielded rapid growth on various fronts. For example, per capita GDP rose to 64,644 yuan ($9,189) in 2018 from 119 yuan in 1952.

Not only is China lifting more of its people out of poverty to a better life, but, together with other BRICS members, the nation is also playing a more active role in global governance. In an earlier report by ECUPL, titled “States’ Participation Index of Global Governance,” China follows the top ranking of US to lead as the second, with India and Brazil ranking at ninth and 12th respectively.

The report observed that these developing countries, boasting their population advantage, have assumed greater responsibilities in global governance. India and Nepal, for example, have dispatched over 6,000 people for overseas peacekeeping missions. Some developing countries, like India and China, also become backbones in solving major global governance challenges, such as poverty relief.

Speaking at the 5th BRICS Summit in Durban, South Africa in 2013, President Xi Jinping has stressed that the bloc should actively engage in global governance and join hands in helping plan an international development agenda to achieve more balanced development.
