GUANGZHOU, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- More than 700 tonnes of smuggled frozen meat was seized in several cases by customs in south China's Guangdong Province, local authorities said Thursday.

The frozen meat were smuggled from the United States, Brazil, Argentina and other countries and regions, according to the Huangpu Customs.

The customs said it intercepted a total of eight ships suspected of smuggling in the cities of Guangzhou and Dongguan recently, seizing 11 suspects and over 700 tonnes of smuggled frozen meat.

Further investigation into these cases is underway.

The jurisdictional area of Huangpu Customs includes the Huangpu and Zengcheng districts of Guangzhou and the city of Dongguan, serving as an important maritime channel for foreign trade in southern China.

This year, customs authorities have launched a number of operations to crack down on smuggled frozen food.

By the end of October, a total of 29 cases involving frozen food smuggled through water channels had been busted and more than 2,400 tonnes of goods worth over 100 million yuan (about 14.2 million U.S. dollars) were seized.
