China's top political advisory body strongly opposes U.S. Senate approval of Hong Kong-related bill

BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisory body on Wednesday expressed strong indignation and firm opposition to the passing of the so-called Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019 in the U.S. Senate, according to a statement issued by the Committee of Foreign Affairs of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee.

The U.S. Senate passed the bill in disregard of repeated solemn representations lodged by the Chinese side, the statement said, adding that the act confused right and wrong and turned black into white.

"It has grossly interfered in China's internal affairs and blatantly interfered in Hong Kong affairs," it said.

Hong Kong has been pushed to a precarious situation by the continuous large-scale violence over the past more than five months, the statement said. The recent violent criminal activities, in particular, have seriously trampled on the rule of law and social order, jeopardized Hong Kong's prosperity and stability and challenged the bottom line of the "one country, two systems" principle, the statement noted.

The top political advisory body said extreme violent acts are intolerable in any country or society, and must be relentlessly dealt with, adding that ending violence and restoring order are the most pressing tasks of Hong Kong.

It said the purpose of passing the Hong Kong-related bill in the U.S. Senate is not about "human rights" or "democracy," but to whitewash and support criminals in Hong Kong. "The malicious and evil intentions are so obvious," the statement said.

It sent a stern warning to anti-China elements in the United States that their attempts to destabilize Hong Kong and contain China's development are doomed to fail.

"No one should underestimate the resolve and determination of China's central government and all Chinese people to safeguard national sovereignty, security and unity and to maintain Hong Kong's prosperity and stability," it said.

Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China, not a state of the United States, the statement said, urging the United States to immediately stop interfering in China's internal affairs and Hong Kong affairs, otherwise, the negative effects will boomerang on itself.

"If the U.S. side ostentatiously sticks to its wrong stance, we firmly support the central government in taking strong countermeasures in response," the statement said.
