ONG KONG, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- The case of 19 people charged with rioting and other offenses for their acts outside the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) was heard by a court on Tuesday and all the defendants' bail was denied, local media RTHK reported.

The 19 people, most of whom are students, were charged for taking part in rioting on Monday at the junction of Chatham Road South and Cheung Wan Road outside the PolyU campus.

Their offenses included rioting, possession of offensive weapons, possession of instrument fit for unlawful purposes and others.

Some of the defendants were also charged with deliberately inflicting grievous bodily harm on others for acts against police officers.

The West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region heard the case on Tuesday and the judge adjourned the case until February next year.

Rioters have occupied the PolyU campus for days and committed vandalism and arson in the area around, leading to the blockade of the Cross-Harbor Tunnel at Hung Hom, a traffic artery linking Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.

They also attacked the police and civilians with lethal weapons such as petrol bombs, bows and arrows.

The Hong Kong police said on Tuesday that they have arrested around 1,100 people in and around PolyU in the past day.
