Chile's president says Spain offers to host UN climate summit

(Xinhua)    15:55, November 01, 2019

SANTIAGO, Oct. 31 -- Chilean President Sebastian Pinera Thursday said Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has offered to host the United Nations' COP25 climate change summit in Madrid.

"I hope that this generous offer from Spain ... represents a solution," Pinera said.

Pinera said on Wednesday that Chile would not host the climate conference due to an ongoing social crisis at home.

Sanchez then offered to hold the summit in Madrid on the same days as previously scheduled, from Dec. 2 and Dec. 13.

The 25th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP25) is the formal meeting of parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Spain has already been in contact with the highest UN and COP25 authorities, offering to continue the summit, said Pinera. The UN climate change panel will study the offer at a meeting next week.

Pinera reaffirmed Chile's "deep and absolute" commitment with "being part of the solution to climate change and global warming."

Chile has been rocked by anti-government protests which have claimed at least 20 lives.
