Commentary: Do not politicize Joshua Wong's law-based disqualification

(Xinhua)    07:54, October 31, 2019

HONG KONG, Oct. 30 -- The disqualification of "Hong Kong independence" group leader Joshua Wong from taking part in Hong Kong's district council election is firmly based on the law.

The Returning Officers for the 2019 District Council Ordinary Election made decisions on the nomination of all candidates.

Wong's advocating for "self-determination" is obviously contrary to the content of the declaration that the law requires a candidate to make to uphold the Basic Law and pledge allegiance to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

This purely legal issue should not be "politicized" at all.

Judging by his consistent behaviors over the past years, Wong, the secretary-general of Demosisto, is a true separatist advocating for "Hong Kong independence."

He has been particularly active during this year's prolonged unrest, colluding with foreign forces, giving pro-secessionist speeches and attacking the "one country, two systems."

It would be not just utterly ridiculous, but also extremely misguided and irresponsible, if such a person were deemed qualified to participate in Hong Kong's local election.

To take part in the election, Wong covered up his true face and misled the public by playing with words. But given his past, there is no doubt that, if given the chance, Wong would immediately and vigorously incite "Hong Kong independence" and turn the city into a battlefield of global forces and a base where he would continue to attempt to subvert the state.

This is not the first time for a Demosisto member to be disqualified. In 2018, Agnes Chow met the same fate when she attempted to take part in the HKSAR Legislative Council by-election.

The District Council, a district-level body, functions in part to advise the HKSAR on district affairs. Its nature determines that the district council election should focus on people's livelihoods.

Since the announcement of his candidacy, Joshua Wong has not sought to serve the community and fellow citizens but has rather used the election as a platform to promote street politics and violence.

Were people like him elected as district-level councilors, it would become a nightmare for the people of Hong Kong and cause long-term damage to the city and the practice of the "one country, two systems."

The District Council is not a platform to advocate "Hong Kong independence" and Hong Kong people will not allow anger and violence to infect and poison their community affairs.
