China-initiated training workshop kicks off in Myanmar for disease treatment

YANGON, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- A China-initiated international training workshop on diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the major diseases in ASEAN countries kicked off in Myanmar's Yangon on Friday.

The workshop will introduce principle and technologies of prenatal, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis and screening in order to prevent the major disease such as Thalassaemia, said Khin Pyone Kyi, medical superintendent of Myanmar's Central Women's Hospital.

The workshop also aims to introduce the principles and technologies of Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) and embryo transfer together with ultrasound practice needed for these procedures.

Su Zhe, first secretary at the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar, expressed beliefs that the workshop will be an important platform for scholars to communicate about technology and experience, and further strengthen cooperation between the two countries in medical science and technology.

Huang Yuanhua, vice-president of China's Hainan Medical University, noted that the training workshop will bring the latest research results by the experts and clinical application of major tropical diseases and infertility for the program and opportunities for the trainees to learn medical technology and clinical experience of major tropical diseases, especially Thalassemia and reproductive medicine through the workshop.

"This workshop means a lot for me as I often have to handle infertility cases at my workplace -- North Okkalapa General Hospital," Hnin Hnin Yu, lecturer of Obstetrics and Gynaecology department of University of Medicine (II) and a trainee of the training workshop, told Xinhua.

With about 21 trainees from Myanmar's regions and states, the workshop is set to run for two weeks at Central Women's Hospital, Yangon.

The training workshop is the second of its kind after the first one was held in November last year, along with establishment of the China-Myanmar Regional Center for Major Disease Control and Prevention.
