BEIJING, Oct. 10 -- The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Thursday urged the city government of the Czech capital Prague to recognize and correct its mistake at an early date after the municipality of Beijing terminated its sister-city relationship with Prague over issues concerning China's core interests.

Since November last year, principal officials of Prague's new municipal authorities have, in defiance of the basic norms governing international relations and the consensus of the international community as well as China's solemn position and strong opposition, repeatedly taken wrong moves and made improper remarks on major issues concerning China's core interests including Taiwan and Tibet, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said.

"They have grossly interfered in China's internal affairs, flagrantly challenged the sister-city relationship with Beijing, severely damaged the political premise and foundation for the two cities to carry out exchanges and caused a bad influence," Geng said.

In view of that, the municipality of Beijing has terminated its sister-city relationship with the city of Prague and suspended all official exchanges, he said.

Meanwhile, China has noticed that far-sighted personages in the Czech Republic, including Czech President Milos Zeman and other political dignitaries, have condemned the wrong moves of Prague's municipal authorities.

"It is in the interests of both countries to advance the China-Czech strategic partnership on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefits," Geng said.

"We hope Prague's municipal authorities can recognize and correct its mistake at an early date so as to create conditions for the two sides to resume exchanges and cooperation," he said.
