China takes more responsibilities in a world undergoing profound changes

By Guo Jiping (People's Daily)    11:19, September 26, 2019

70 years on, the world witnessed a great country rise from the east.

At the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the country’s economic aggregate was less than 50 billion yuan ($7 billion). China was not able to produce a car or a tractor, not to say a tank or a plane.

Under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the Chinese nation embarked on a magnificent journey toward modernization. After 70 years of forging ahead, today, China’s annual economic growth is equal to the total GDP of a medium-sized developed country.

China’s process of standing up, growing rich and becoming strong is the nirvana of the phoenix. In just a few decades, the country has completed the industrialization process that took developed countries several hundred years.

In the past seven decades, China advanced with the times, influencing the world as it kept developing. From a semi-closed society to a country that pursues all-round opening-up, China has been shifting the global center of gravity eastwards. Nowadays, the world’s second largest economy has become the No.1 engine of global economic growth.

While China expends its own development path, it provides an alternative choice to modernization for developing countries who wish to maintain their independence when developing.

Historian Arnold Toynbee predicted that if China can blaze a new path in its social and economic strategies, then it can prove its capacity to endow a gift on China and the world.

The past and the present both prove that the most fundamental reason for China’s brilliant achievements over the past 70 years is that the country embarked on a development path that suits itself.

The success of the China’s road has shown the world the powerful strength of an inclusive civilization. By learning from the world and practicing, China actively explores the way of the CPC’s governance, socialist construction and social development.

Dr. Caroline, a German researcher on East Asian issues, said that what the CPC impresses her most is that the party is not an abstract and changeless symbol described by some politicians and media in the West, but it is constantly progressing. The CPC has amazing learning ability that allows it to learn from others, she said.

The CPC clearly knows its historical position, direction, and mission, said Abuzer Pinar, a scholar at the Institute of Strategic Thinking in Turkey.

The original aspiration and mission of the CPC - to seek happiness for the people, to rejuvenate the nation, and to seek common development - is the best footnote for China Stories

Over the past 70 years, China has maintained its ambition, committed to promoting mutually beneficial cooperation with the world.

From the founding of People’s Republic of China, to the reform and opening-up, and then to the new era, China has always been thinking about how to rejuvenate the nation while pushing for human progress.

The gift brought by the Chinese miracle to the world is not only reflected in statistical data, but also in China’s gesture to actively shoulder responsibilities at critical moments and seek truth and innovation.

During the 2008 international financial crisis, China's economy maintained steady growth, injecting valuable confidence and motivation to the world.

Today, the world economy has reached another transitional moment. In face of the anti-globalization sentiments, China continues to deepen reforms and maintains sufficient momentum and resilience for growth, playing an increasingly prominent role in reducing economic fluctuation and enhancing confidence for global economy.

In any case, one thing is clear: if China no longer grows, the world will fall into a severe depression. This statement made by German media has become the consensus of the international community.

As a Chinese saying goes, people with petty shrewdness attend to trivial matters while those with greater wisdom attend to governance of institutions. Faced with issues such as the lack of growth dynamism and imbalanced development, China has contributed to interactive development of the world through advocating pragmatic cooperation, injecting new vitality and impetus into the high-quality development of the world economy.

The joint construction of the Belt and Road benefits the whole world. It is a program in which China and the rest of the world work together to build a road of hope and win-win outcomes.

In the past six years, China’s total trade in goods with countries along the Belt and Road has exceeded $6 trillion, and the country’s direct investment in the latter has exceeded $90 billion.

A World Bank report shows that the full implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative could help 32 million people get rid of moderate poverty, and increase global trade and global income by 6.2% and 2.9%, respectively.

Adhering to innovation, coordination, green, openness, and shared development, China will open up new development prospects through benign interaction and win-win cooperation with the world.

China is always running forward. The vitality to move forward, the vigor of struggle, and the spirit of chasing dreams are important spiritual symbols of Chinese society.

Shenzhen in southern China’s Guangdong province, known as the “city of innovation”, has started a new journey to become a global benchmark in competitiveness, innovation and influence.

In Shanghai’s Pudong district, where the legend of reform and opening up is being written, a pilot free trade zone was officially unveiled, taking on the responsibility of creating an experimental field for a new round of high-level opening-up.

In the front line of poverty alleviation, the battle against poverty is in full swing, moving the dream of poverty eradication closer to reality.

What happened in the past is prologue, but the prologue is far from the climax. The Chinese revolution is great, but the road after the revolution will be longer, the work greater and more arduous.

In 1949, the newborn China was looking far. In the new era, China will continue to strive hard, provide more wisdom and solutions to solve problems facing mankind and make unremitting efforts to build a community with a shared future for mankind.
